IISE DFW October Puzzlor

The Puzzlor challenge is underway! On the first day of each month, we will send out a new question testing your knowledge of the topics listed in the IISE Body of Knowledge. Submit your responses, and be eligible for a $100 prize! See the complete rules at the bottom of this e-mail for entry and submission details.

We are looking forward to kicking off the year-long activity, and hopefully it will serve as a refresher for some IE skills you may not have touched in a while. The month following a puzzlor, we will publish a video to our IISE Connect page going over the responses we received and the solution. We hope you find this fun, and informational!

October Puzzlor: Time Value of Money

You decide to invest in a small investment fund. You plan to invest $1,000 into this fund at the end of each year. This fund advertises a 3% interest rate, compounded annually. In year 5, you plan on depositing an additional $1,200 dollars due to an anticipated bonus at work. You will withdraw the funds in year 10.

1. Draw a Cash Flow Diagram for the anticipated investment

2. What is the Future Value of this investment at year 10?

3. What is the Future Value of this investment at year 10, if the interest was compounded monthly?

4. If you decided to invest the same amount of money each year instead of the $1,000 annual deposit plus the one-time deposit of $1,200 in year 5, how much would you deposit each year (compounded annually)?

Entry

  • To be eligible, you must be a dues-paying member to IISE with affiliation to Dallas-Fort Worth, and/or have affiliation with IISE DFW via IISE Connect (Virtual Members)

Rules of Play

  • The contest will run from October 1st, 2020 to September 30th, 2021.
  • On the first of each month, a new question will be released to the community.
    • A question will be a “textbook” sort of question intended to identify key skills an IE might be responsible for knowing
    • Responses may come in the form of an excel spreadsheet (.xls, .xlsx, .xlsm), word document (.doc, .docx), pdf (.pdf), or image(.jpg, .bmp, .png).
      • If, for example, you use MATLAB, Python, or any other software to solve the problem, please do not respond with that software’s file type as your answer. These should be converted to one of the above submission options
    • Participants will have the entire month to submit their response to bstrevens19@gmail.com
    • Responses are due 11:59 PM of the last day of the month to be considered for prize eligibility
  • Questions will derive from topics included in the IISE Body of Knowledge (BoK)
    • Other topics still related to IE will be considered, but primarily, questions will relate to some topic within the BoK.

Scoring

  • One (1) point will be awarded for submitting a response
  • One (1) point will be awarded for submitting a correct response
  • One (1) point will be awarded for submitting the most innovative response*
    • * “Innovative” is subjective and determined by the board. This might be a response that is most appropriately detailed, thorough, unique, most efficient, or uses an unconventional methodology.

Prizes

At the end of the year, the top 3 members in scoring will each receive a $100 cash prize, to be distributed via check or visa gift card (TBD).

08/12/2020 IISE DFW General Meeting Minutes

Membership in the IISE DFW chapter is projected to hit 212 by the end of the year. We’ve had several people from Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the Texas panhandle join.

IISE DFW has nearly nine thousand dollars in the bank for when we’re ready to resume lunches and give out scholarships to the UTA IISE chapter. It is unclear when we’ll be able to meet again in person.

First Puzzlor has concluded. The three people who provided the right answer were recognized: Drew Harnish, Efrain Girardot and Joe Michels. One member demonstrated how he solved the IE puzzle with Python.

Tamara Wilhite explained the benefits of IISE Connect over other platforms.

We’ve had at least one DFW member present a webinar each month with another planned for 9/9/2020. Group solicited proposals for future topics and events.

Puzzlor

We will now be sending out via e-mail a question that would require an IE skill in order to solve. We will collect answers from the membership and then “showcase” the best or most creative solutions.

Here is the Puzzlor to be solved before the August 12th meeting.

NewBiz Inc., a company that makes and sells trophies anticipates a demand for at least 2300 football trophies, 1900 baseball trophies, and 2100 soccer trophies. Production limitations restrict NewBiz Inc. from making more than 3400 football trophies, 2500 baseball trophies, and 2750 soccer trophies in one day. In order to break even with the distribution company, NewBiz estimates they need to ship at least 5500 trophies, but only has enough trucks to deliver 7500. The football trophies earn $9.50 in profit each, the baseball trophies earn $7.25 in profit each, and soccer trophies earn $8.00 in profit each.

How much of each trophy does NewBiz Inc. need to make in order to maximize profit?
Which product should NewBiz Inc. invest more production equipment and floor space to in order to increase profits (assuming investment will be profitable)? Why?

Submit your responses to the Puzzlor to bstrevens19@gmail.com.

IISE DFW Awarded GOLD!

Good Afternoon IISE DFW!

I am extremely pleased to announce that Chapter 10, Dallas-Fort Worth, was awarded the Chapter Recognition Program Gold Award by the IISE National Team for the South Central Region.

Chapter excellence is judged by a number of factors, including but not limited to quality of programs, membership growth and retention, participation in volunteer leadership development, student chapter support, and strategic planning.

To our board: Yuan Zhou, Josie Umoh, Tamara Wilhite, Shernette Kydd, Isaac Villarreal, and Chris Campbell. Thank you for your hard work planning and executing events and administrative items that are required to keep the chapter running! Organizing the chapter would be an impossible task without your vital efforts.

To our membership, THANK YOU for being active and attentive! There certainly is no chapter without a strong member base, and we have one of the best! This award is a reflection of your activities and participation in our community, and for that I am very thankful.

I look forward to more Gold awards in the coming years!

Brian Strevens
President, IISE Dallas-Fort Worth
