IISE DFW Plans As We Reopen 05/30/2020
A Coronavirus Update
We hope that everyone has stayed safe during these uncertain times. Most of us have adjusted by telecommuting, which has presented its own challenges, but we are sure that our members maintained a level of efficiency even with all of the new arrangements brought about due to COVID-19. Please continue to stay safe, especially now that Texas has begun a reopening process. We are keeping those in mind who are either directly or indirectly affected by the coronavirus.
If you would like to monitor the spread of the virus, John’s Hopkins University has built a tool which I personally recommend. If you are curious about how IISE is responding to the pandemic, please click here.
I personally thank you for your commitment to IISE, and I hope that the virtual content we intend to provide over the coming months fulfills an appetite for ISE content. On behalf of your IISE Dallas – Fort Worth Board, thank you.
Sincerely,
Brian Strevens, President, IISE Dallas – Fort Worth

There was discussion of including Doctor Eric Jones in a future such meeting.
Task: Shernette R. Kydd would talk to Dr. Jones about speaking.
Status: He is willing to participate and will give dates, but he is projecting 30 days out. He can cover a full hour session, but we can turn it into a covid 19 supply chain event. I might be able to get our Supply Chain AVP also. He has requested an honorarium (donation) to his lab. $500 for 2 students, total $1000.
- RFID Webinar
Shernette Kidd is talking to an RFID company CEO to give a talk on this subject.
- Excel Webinar
This is a topic found to be of interest and need from the joint student-professional meeting several months ago. Brian Strevens will give this lecture, likely in the next two to three weeks.
- IISE Job Opportunities
Shernette has created a job requisition form that can be used to collect and add job postings to the members only section of the website. This is independent of the IISE Career Center.
Tamara needs to set up a members-only section for job listings.
Tamara will work with Brian to create an email and send it out soliciting job postings to be put on the IISE website.
Discussed the value of using IISE members as professional references and connecting with mentors.
- Membership Roster
Chris Campbell says we’ve hit 187 members, up from 178 at last count.
Chris provided updated list to be used for mailing list.

02/18/2020 IISE DFW Professional – Student Chapter Joint Meeting
The joint IISE DFW professional and student chapter meeting at UTA on 02/18/2020 started with scholarship awards.
The IISE scholarship for outstanding junior went to Steven John Varghese.
The IISE scholarship for outstanding senior went to Cera Sneed.
A presentation on the Lean Green Belt and Six Sigma Green Belt certifications offered via the IISE at UTA were presented. The fees for this go to the student chapter and help pay 80-100% of their attendance costs for the national IISE conference.
UTA IE / IMSE students were told about the benefits of joining the IISE and that we had mentors available.
Dr. Mentz discussed the software and programming courses available to students at UTA and future options available.
We concluded with a professional panel answering questions from students; there was an emphasis on career advice.
IISE Coronavirus Response
Hello members of the IISE DFW community,
As everyone is aware, the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has begun impacting many facets of our daily lives. Schools are temporarily suspending activities, businesses are approving telecommuting options, and people across the country are restricting their interaction with others. It is with all of this in mind that we must be conscious of the reasons why this is all taking place.
The IISE DFW chapter will be suspending all in-person activities effective immediately. This includes the notice we sent out last week regarding dinner socials. Your IISE DFW leadership team will be monitoring the situation, and provide updates as appropriate. When it is the right time, we will resume in-person activities. Our members safety and health is at the forefront of our minds.
We encourage you to also be proactive during this time. Unfortunately, there are cybersecurity concerns as many people with poor intentions look to capitalize on our concerns and search for information. Please be cautious of the applications you download to your devices, and only engage with sources of information you have vetted and trust. Here is some literature that we hope will prove useful:
1] NBC News: Facebook Groups
2] Krebs on Security: Live Coronavirus Map Used to Spread Malware
In the Krebs on Security article, they mention applications linking to a real Coronavirus map. If you are curious about the status of the outbreak, I recommend going straight to the source. The dashboard published by Johns Hopkins University can be found here: Live Coronavirus Map
Thank you for your understanding. We will be pursuing virtual content in order to continue providing content and value for your membership with us. Please stay tuned for future announcements about online content as we continue in our hiatus from in-person activities.
